Physical Education Program

The physical education curriculum for Providence Academy includes the Virginia Standards of Learning and the National Association for Sport and Physical Education standards. NASPE provides five general standards that are relevant for students of all ages and physical aptitude. They encompass all aspects of physical education including: motor skills, knowledge of concepts and rules, good sportsmanship, and the value of physical activity for a healthy lifestyle. The Virginia SOLs provide a grade-by-grade guide to what each student should know. These standards will be met by various means including, but not limited to, partner activities, group games, fitness activities, fitness-testing, and concept knowledge. To measure the 5th-8th grade students’ level of physical fitness, four of the five components of physical fitness will be measured, including:

  • cardiovascular endurance
  • muscular strength
  • muscular endurance
  • flexibility

Students will also be taught how to improve these components. Motivating students to participate in physical activities in and out of the classroom is an integral part of the physical education program at Providence Academy.

Health

Students in 6th-8th grade will have health education as well as physical education. The health curriculum focuses on the three aspects of health: physical, mental, and emotional. Students will be provided with an understanding of the human body and how to properly care for it. Students will be taught about nutrition, stress management, and healthy life choices. Biblical principals are integrated in the curriculum in order to show how the Bible addresses issues related to health and well-being.

Competitive Athletics

The mission of the Athletics Department is to bring glory to our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, while giving our students the opportunity to grow physically, mentally, and spiritually through a competitive athletics program. Athletics builds character by offering students the chance to compete and overcome adversity. Providence Academy is a Christian School, and our athletic teams will reflect our beliefs.

Our competitive athletics program includes track, volleyball, basketball, flag football, and a growing number of other sports to help students learn important things such as teamwork and grace. Athletics build character by offering students opportunities to compete. Excellence is the standard.

Providence Academy is a member of the Northern Virginia Independent Athletic Conference (NVIAC). The NVIAC is a Christian conference that offers our school the opportunity to compete against other private schools in Northern Virginia. The NVIAC offers competitive play in a God-honoring setting.
