Providence Academy Service-Learning: Spreading the Love of Reading

Bringing Faith into the Community

Service-learning provides an important opportunity for students to bring classroom lessons directly into the community. Through Providence Academy service-learning projects, children put their faith into action while blessing those around them.

Two years ago, our second-grade students studied various missionaries serving across the globe. During their lessons, the class felt particularly inspired by the life of Susannah Spurgeon. In 1875, Ms. Spurgeon established a special book fund to send reading materials to poor pastors. Her ministry eventually provided over 200,000 books to individuals in need.

The Story of “The Book Place”

Inspired by her legacy, our second graders created “The Book Place” for our school community. This student-led project helps share the joy of reading across our entire campus.

Today, families can find two separate library boxes on campus. The lower school box sits right near the second-grade classroom. Meanwhile, the middle school library box is located in the cafeteria.

How You Can Participate

You are welcome to pick out a book from either box at any time. If you would like to donate, simply leave one or two books at the front desk. We gladly accept donations of 1 to 2 books at a time.

This project reflects Ephesians 2:10, which reminds us, “For we are God’s handiwork, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do.” Ultimately, Providence Academy service-learning inspires our whole community to spread the love of reading together!
