Providence Academy STEM Challenge: Second Grade Tower Power

Exploring Engineering and Foundations

Our second graders recently stepped into the shoes of structural engineers. Through our Providence Academy STEM challenge in second grade, students learned how careful planning helps build sturdy structures.

To kick off the lesson, the class read the inspiring book Tower Power. Afterward, students explored how strong foundations and creative designs keep tall buildings standing.

Hands-On Building with Straws and Tape

Next, it was time for students to put their engineering knowledge into practice. Using only straws and tape, the young engineers designed and built their very own towers.

Throughout the challenge, students experimented with different shapes and adjusted their designs. For example, they problem-solved together to discover what makes a tower stand tall and stable.

Thinking Like Engineers

This hands-on activity encouraged critical thinking and creative collaboration in the classroom. In addition, students experienced the excitement of testing their ideas in real time.

Ultimately, our Providence Academy STEM challenge showed second graders that learning can be both fun and rewarding. We are so proud of our young builders and their incredible creativity!
